Despite the loss, there were instantly calls for the often beleaguered England manager Gareth Southgate to be rewarded with a knighthood for leading the national team to its second successive European Cup final.
England previously lost to Italy on penalties in 2021. That match took place at London’s Wembley Stadium, the setting for England’s last victory in an international tournament, 58 years ago, back in 1966.
