Eco protestors who disrupted cycling championships branded 'selfish' and 'childish'

Eco-protestors who disrupted the elite men’s road race for almost an hour have been blasted for their “childish” stunt.The ‘This Is Rigged’ campaign group said the target of the stunt was Petrochemical giant INEOS, who are sponsoring one of the teams.Five protestors managed to hold up the UCI Cycling World Championships after glueing themselves to a narrow stretch of the B818, west of Falkirk.Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie said: “People have a right to protest but the actions today only put lives at risk.“Protest should be conducted in a safe and orderly manner, and should not endanger staff or participants in events.”A spokesperson for the pro-independence Alba party said: “Disrupting a cycling event in the name of the environment is as stupid as when eco warriors in London blocked people gaining access to public transport to highlight the need to take urgent action to tackle climate change.“Of course the irony isn’t lost that the super glue they are using to glue themselves to roads is most likely made from fossil fuels.”Tory MSP Graham Simpson said: “This was a dangerous act of disruption which put both the protesters and athletes in this race at risk.“It’s utterly nonsensical for a group which claims to stand for environmental protection to target an event promoting active, green travel like cycling – and raises a huge question mark about this publicity-seeking group’s true motives.“The World Cycling Championships offers an enormous opportunity to advertise Glasgow, Scotland and the sport itself right across the world.
