Drunk man grieving after his partner was found dead in canal hurled abuse at cop giving him lift home in lockdown

A drunk man who hurled homophobic abuse at a police officer who gave him a lift home during the lockdown has avoided jail. Shane Smith, 32, was seen in a ‘drunken’ state outside of the Spar store when the officer offered him a lift to his home in Clayton out of ‘good will’.

But whilst driving him home, Smith was abusive towards her and told her she had ‘dykey hair’, Manchester Magistrates Court heard.

The court heard Smith had been grieving after his partner was found dead in a canal a month earlier, and had struggled to cope with staying indoors since.

But prosecutors also said Smith has now breached a Criminal Behaviour Order three times, which stated he must not use abusive words towards another person or get drunk in a public place in
