It's one of the most instantly recognisable sights on UK roads, with the speed camera sign a warning to drivers to slow down or face breaking the law. However, many motorists might not know what the symbol on a speed camera sign actually depicts.

Have you ever assumed the picture on the well-known road sign is that of a side-profile camera? Turns out it shows something completely different.Despite being such a popular sign, drivers are only just discovering what it really shows - and it may change your perspective forever.Twitter user @FeyeraBender set the record straight and pointed out that the sign doesn't actually depict the side profile of an old-fashioned camera with a lens pointing outward. In fact, it may actually show a modern speed camera with two lenses pointing directly at you, with the object to the side the mounting. They wrote: "For years i thought the UK speed camera depicted a Victorian bellows camera pointing to the right, but it's a boring CCTV camera pointing towards the viewer."The revelation shocked drivers who took to the comments, with one person saying they had been "living a lie".One person said: "I thought this too.

what’s the side thing if it is facing you?"One person said they would "carry on believing the Victorian bellows theory", while another said the sign was "so mean looking to me suddenly".However, one person pointed out that the old-fashioned design is correct, as "everyone knows exactly what it represents."According to the Highway Code, the sign depicts "a black camera symbol appears on a white background on sections of road covered by speed cameras and average speed cameras."So, it might be up to the viewer to determine what the sign actually shows.
