Motorists have been told to avoid the Mancunian Way if possible with a stretch of the flyover to be closed for at least 24 hours whilst emergency repairs are carried out.
A manhole cover and frame has collapsed on the eastbound stretch between Sackville Street and London Road, heading towards Piccadilly.
As a result, a lane on that side of the road has been closed, with just one lane remaining open.. It caused long delays for commuters during this morning's rush hour. And they are now asking people who normally use the stretch to prepare for disruption and avoid it if they can. A town hall spokesperson said: "Due to a collapsed manhole frame and cover a section of the Mancunian Way, between Sackville Street and London Road (eastbound), has been temporarily closed to allow for emergency repairs. "Teams are on site now, with one lane remaining open pending the completion of the repairs, which could take an estimated 24 hours to complete.
