Medical experts are warning social media users not to follow a popular trend that could lead to infection.Dozens of videos have recently surfaced on TikTok praising castor oil as a way to "treat" eye issues.
The essential oil made from pressed castor beans does offer a number of health benefits, but mainly for the digestive system. But US doctors have said that when it comes to the eyes, the vegetable oil is not a "cure all" and may actually do more harm than good.
Anyone enduring eye problems are being advised to consult an optician after a number of women claimed the oil improved their optical organs.Videos suggest that rubbing the oil over eyelids, lashes and under the eye can aid dryness, while putting drops right in the eye can supposedly reduce "floaters", prevent cataracts, poor vision and even glaucoma - but there is no medical evidence to support this, reports Wales Online.Sky News reports one woman has claimed that after two weeks of use, she can wear her reading glasses less often, while another said the oil prevented an eye infection from progressing.
In response to the worrying trend, LA based optician Dr Vicki Chan said the oil's "not going to seep in and dissolve or fix anything".Speaking to the UK news outlet, she added that castor oil has no effect on conditions that impact the inside of the eyeball.
