Hughie Higginson was first diagnosed with leukaemia in 2020 and was too poorly to leave hospital for weeks. After around a month and a half on the ward, he was finally able to go up to the roof of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and breathe fresh air for the first time in more than a month.

The precious play area at the top of the hospital is used by thousands of young patients like Hughie – many of whom may be staying at the hospital for weeks, months or even years – to be outside, enjoy time to play and get a welcome break.

But the much-loved park is in 'desperate need of a revamp' after 14 years of constant use, according to hospital leaders. And knowing just how important the playground is during dark times, little Hughie has decided to take on the cause.

He, along with his best friend Freddie, are kicking off a huge fundraising appeal to give the children's play area a complete makeover.
