'Defenceless' man in his late 70s attacked and pushed into canal during violent robbery

An elderly man was pushed into the canal during a violent robbery in Leigh. The man in his late 70s was walking along the towpath next to the Bridgewater Canal when he was set upon.

It is believed he had his push bike taken from him before violently attacked and pushed into the water, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

The alarm was raised and officers attended where they found him with serious head injuries. He was taken to hospital but has since been discharged and is recovering at home. Despite the image being of poor quality, the focce hope someone will come forward with information that will help them identify them.

An image has also been issued of the bike, which has not been recovered. Detective Sergeant Victoria Smith, from GMP’s Wigan district, said: “The victim suffered serious injuries to his head which must have been so terrifying for him. “He felt completely defenceless, and after being pushed into the canal, the victim was able to use all the strength he had to climb out of the canal whilst suffering from his injuries. “We are now at a stage to release a CCTV image to the public of a man we wish to speak to, as we believe he could assist with our investigation, we understand that the CCTV image is not of the best quality but we hope in releasing the image, someone who was there at the time of the incident will come forward with information, it may just spark a memory.
