Fresh appeal after 'defenceless' elderly man attacked and pushed into canal

Police have today issued a fresh appeal for information after an elderly man was attacked and pushed into a canal in a violet robbery in Leigh.

The terrifying incident happened by the Bridgewater Canal at around 4.30pm on June 8. The 'defenceless' man, aged in his 70s, was set upon before his bike was taken from him.

He was 'violently assaulted' and pushed into the water, police said. He had to use 'all his strength' to pull himself out of the canal to safety. Today (August 28) police renewed the appeal for information in a post on Facebook. "Detectives continue to appeal for more information after an elderly man was found with serious injuries", the post on GMP Wigan said. "At around 4.30pm on the 8 June 2024, we were called to reports of a violent robbery on Bridgewater Canal in Leigh. "Officers who attended found an elderly man in his late 70s with serious injuries.
