No decisions have been made on rumoured plans to move the bus station away from Piccadilly Gardens, the mayor has said. Reports on Thursday morning (August 1) have suggested Manchester City Council is looking at moving the Parker Street bus station away from the square as part of a £25m revamp.

It’s understood council bosses have ruled out returning the area to the ‘sunken rose garden’ seen in the mid-20th century. However, it’s also been said previously that one potential idea in the refurbishment is to move the bus stops away from the Morrisons store on the other side of Piccadilly Gardens. But the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, says no decisions have been made yet. "It's one to look at carefully. I do not believe any decisions have been made from the City Council,” he told the In The Hotseat phone-in. “We are part of the discussions as well [in our role with TfGM].

It's not about moving it miles away, it's about making it a better part of the city. No decisions have been made and the public will be consulted if any changes are proposed." The reports come almost a year-to-the-day since Manchester council appointed LDA Design to lead on the project, with ‘concept designs’ being completed by March 2024.
