Coronation Street star Millie Gibson dropped from new series of Doctor Who after just one series

Millie Gibson is set to be replaced as Doctor Who's companion in future series of the BBC sci-fi show.The former Coronation Street star Millie appeared in her first episode alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor in the Christmas Special last month.

However it has now been revealed that Millie will be replaced as the Doctor's sidekick by actress Varada Seethu in Ncuti's second series in the leading role.The decision by showrunner Russell T Davies to write out Millie, who plays orphan Ruby Sunday, was made last year after filming on her first run ended.

Now the 19-year-old will not appear in the 2024 Christmas special later this year and will make only a handful of appearances across Ncuti’s second series as the Doctor during 2025, the Mirror reports.

The eight episodes she has filmed already will air from May, the BBC has announced. After that, Varada, who has already started filming at the studios in Cardiff, will take over.The actress, 32, is best known for her role as Cinta in Disney’s 2022 Star Wars spin-off Andor, and has also appeared in three series of Sky’s action drama Strike Back, based on the books by Chris Ryan.The Indian-born actress, who grew up in Newcastle with her twin sister , also played DS Mishal Ali in the BBC’s 2017 apocalyptic drama Hard Sun.
