Umbro has won a High Court trademark battle with a rival sportswear firm over its famous 'double diamond' logo. Manchester-based Umbro sued online footwear brand Dream Pairs for infringing the trademark of its emblem, which has been used on sports kits since the early 70s.
Dream Pairs uses a diamond logo with a 'P' shaped loop set at a 45 degree angle at its centre. A judge had initially ruled Umbro's trademark hadn't been infringed as there was 'at most a very low degree of similarity' between the two logos.
But the historic firm, which supplied England's 1966 World Cup winning strip, appealed against that ruling, arguing that when seen while being worn, the two logos were easily confused.
London's Appeal Court heard that Dream Pairs began selling trainers, football boots and hiking boots sporting the logo in 2019.
