A young child in just a jumper and nappy was left alone in a "squalid" and freezing cold apartment so a drug dealer could go out and sell drugs.

Dean Welch left the child with weapons and drugs "at arm's length" and only a bullmastiff and two bulldogs for company. The property was being used to store thousands of pounds of cocaine and was described as being filled with an "overwhelming smell of excrement and urine", Liverpool Echo reports.

The child was discovered after plain clothes police on duty in Seacombe, Wirral, spotted a drug deal in progress as part of an operation to tackle county lines gangs in December last year.Joanne Maxwell, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court, how a cyclist involved was found in possession of two wraps of cannabis after being stopped by the officers while Welch ran off but was detained after a short chase.A search revealed the 40-year-old was carrying two £20 notes and a "burner type" Nokia mobile phone.

When he was arrested, he confessed he had left the child alone in his flat on Brighton Street in Wallasey and that it was "in a mess".The primary school-aged youngster was found by police inside playing on a mobile phone in the living room of the open plan property.
