Young mum's tiredness and common symptom had shattering implications

When young mum Mia Anne Brehme noticed she was bleeding whenever she used the toilet, she assumed she had piles. The 23-year-old tried haemorrhoid cream to treat her symptoms but the bleeding would always come back.

On July 10, Mia had an oral examination and was referred for a colonoscopy, a test which checks the inside of the bowels.

While awaiting her results, the mum, from Leigh, became very unwell and started experiencing a lot of pain. Just eight days after her appointment, Mia was given the heartbreaking news that she had stage 4 colon cancer and secondary cancer in her liver and lungs.

Her first thought was her three-year-old daughter, Kyla-Mae. “I thought, ‘What am I going to do? What is she going to do?’” the mum told the Manchester Evening News. “I’m not writing myself off as a mother, however I had to think about it because she is my pride and joy and I couldn’t leave her without a mother. “It’s never easy being told, at the age of 23, that I have stage 4 cancer.
