Carstairs man who lost an eye due to cancer taking part in fundraiser for Beatson charity

A cancer patient from Carstairs who lost an eye will be taking part in an annual 10k walk to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity.Peter Abernethy, 63, and his wife Cath will be participating in Off the Beatson Track, and hope to raise over £500 for the charity to help future patients and their families.Four years on from his initial cancer diagnosis, Peter is still going through treatment.He was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2020 and then diagnosed again earlier this year, which resulted in him losing his eye.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

However, as time was going on it was spreading, and it had spread to the back of the eye and into the bone.”He continued: “I am still getting radiotherapy to prevent it coming back and I couldn’t have done it without The Beatson, doctors and nurses and all my friends and family.”The Lanarkshire man decided to take part in the walk to give something back following the support and treatment he has received.He added: “I am quite a quiet guy, so sometimes I find it hard to find the words to speak about how I feel, but The Beatson’s been there for me and helped me to be able to speak more with my family.“Beatson Cancer Charity are always there for me
