Salford City have axed manager Neil Wood following a 5-1 home thumping by Tranmere Rovers on Boxing Day. Salford reached the play-offs last season, losing to Stockport County in the semi-finals.
The Ammies have struggled to repeat that form this time around and are 21st in the table with 23 points from 23 games. The club, owned by the Class of 92 group of former Manchester United players, face Grimsby Town on Friday with assistant Simon Wiles in charge.
Former United players Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes are all part of the ownership cohort at the fourth tier club. He was appointed boss of Salford in May 2022 in what was his first senior managerial role. A club statement read: "Salford City Football Club announce the departure of Head Coach Neil Wood.
