During a drug-fuelled session in the pub, David Liptrot made a confession. As word spread about the bar, the mood soured. It 'sickened' his fellow punter, who informed the landlady of the 55-year-old's admission.

When questioned on the claim, Liptrot said: "If there is ever big problems, you get rid of them, you get shut." As Liptrot sang Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline and snorted cocaine, his girlfriend Caroline Gore lay dead on her bathroom floor.

Officers found Ms Gore's body on the bathroom floor of her flat. Liptrot, of Shelley Close, Coppull, Lancashire, denied murdering his partner - who was described in court as 'vulnerable', having suffered with mental health difficulties.
