Three major food delivery companies have agreed to work with Andy Burnham to tackle safety concerns. But the Greater Manchester mayor has warned Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat that if safety does not improve enough, the authorities will look at taking action.
Mr Burnham held a meeting with representatives from all three firms this week after concerns were raised with him about couriers travelling at excessive speeds, riding bikes on pavements and ignoring traffic lights as well as not using lights or wearing reflective clothing at night.
Speaking on BBC Radio Manchester last month, one woman told the mayor she was 'very worried' about the issue. Lyn, from Saddleworth, said she was frightened of hitting delivery riders on bikes when driving.
But she also said she feels unsafe walking around the city centre, adding, "your life is in your hands when you're walking the streets of Manchester with these bikes."
