Manchester City Council’s local election is just around the corner and there are 33 seats up for grabs. When polls open on May 4, a total of 143 candidates are seeking election to 33 places on the council – one in each of the city’s 32 wards plus an additional vacancy in Ardwick following the retirement of a sitting councillor.
This comes after the decision by Coun Bernard Priest to retire from his post after years of service to his ward. The 2023 local elections are the first to take place under new national legislation which means that anyone voting in a polling station will need to take approved photo ID.
A full list of eligible photo ID can be found at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID. Anyone who doesn’t have eligible photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) at www.gov.uk. The deadline to apply for this certificate is 5pm on Tuesday 25 April.
