Airdrie player-boss Rhys McCabe has revealed he will be out for a at least a couple of more weeks with a knee injury - but the extent of the problem is not as bad as first feared. The midfielder went down in a heap during last week's Championship win over Partick Thistle, landing awkwardly after a clash with James Lyon, and had to be stretchered off the pitch at New Broomfield. He missed yesterday's enthralling extra-time defeat to Ross County in the Viaplay Cup, watching from the dugout as his side rallied from 3-1 down to tie the match and then lose 4-3 after the additional period. And he has now provided fans with an update on his injury.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "I went for a scan and I've got a grade two MCL (medial collateral ligament) tear so it is as good news as I could get because I don't need an operation. "I didn't want to self-diagnose myself but the shooting, stabbing pain I felt when I twisted it, I knew something had happened.

To get the clarification that it was a small tear and I don't need surgery is great."Hopefully I can get back into training of some kind at the end of the month, so in a couple of weeks I can get back into some kind of normal routine."Now the focus is on trying to help the boys as much as I can from a different standpoint on the sidelines."It is good news for me, but a bit of bad news at the same time."Airdrie will face Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday in the Championship and McCabe will miss that contest but both he and the fans will hope he may be able to play some part in a huge clash with title favourites Dundee United at Tannadice on September 2.

Following that, Airdrie travel to Stirling University in the SPFL Trust Trophy on September 9.Follow Lanarkshire Live
