A memorial service commemorating the worst rail disaster in Scottish and British history will be held in Edinburgh this weekend. On Saturday, the Royal Scots Regimental Association (RSRA) will host its annual remembrance service paying respects to the victims of the Quintinshill rail disaster.

The tragedy, which occurred at 6.49am on May 22, 1915, involved a catastrophic collision between a troop train and a stationary local passenger train at Quintinshill near Gretna. The troop train subsequently derailed onto the opposite track, before the wreckage was struck within a minute by an express train heading to Glasgow.

This in turn ignited a fire that engulfed the troop train. The disaster claimed the lives of three officers, 31 NCOs, and 182 soldiers from the 7th Battalion The Royal Scots.

The train driver, the fireman, and 10 additional victims also sadly lost their lives.Widely recognised as the most devastating rail disaster in British history, the remembrance event is scheduled for May 25.
