Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy‘s season is over before it really began. This week, it was revealed that the 21-year-old rookie had a meniscus in his knee that required surgery.

The Vikings are disappointed, but they “strongly believe he will come back better and have a long, successful NFL career,” ESPN reports.

This means that quarterback Sam Darnold will continue to be the starting quarterback going forward. J.J. had played in the Vikings’ first pre-season game behind Darnold, but many hoped he’d get some play time in as the future starter for the team.
