A group of Ukrainian children are being given a respite holiday in Dumfries and Galloway from conflict at home next month. From August 16 to 26, the 17 children and young people – aged between eight and 17 – and two teachers from a small Ukrainian town called Lyubotin, near the city of Kharkiv in the east of Ukraine, will be staying at the Barcaple outdoor centre near Ringford.

Some of them have lost parents to the invasion by Russia. They will be enjoying time out at places in the region and beyond thanks to major fundraising – which is still under way.

The Lyubotin council are providing some funding, and the children’s families are contributing as much as they can, but appeals have been issued in the region to help raise the rest.

The money needed for travel and accommodation within the UK part of the trip is being collected by the Lockerbie Friends of Ukraine who look after the Ukrainian POW chapel and Museum near Lockerbie.
