A commemorative cherry tree is to be planted at a Ukrainian heritage barracks near Lockerbie on Saturday in solidarity with the people of the war-torn country.
August 24 marks Ukrainian Independence Day. Members of the historic Hallmuir Camp site – which has the region’s prisoner of war Ukranian Chapel in one barrack and the newly-created cultural heritage centre in another – are inviting all those with a Ukrainian heritage and refugees in the region, plus their Scottish sponsors and friends, to join in the day from 2pm to 4pm.
Tea and coffee will be available, and anyone who wants to stay on after the ceremony is invited to bring their own picnic. Lockerbie Friends of Ukraine, the group behind the project at Hallmuir, have transformed an original barracks to include a Ukrainian heritage hub.
This latest work at the camp follows careful restoration, including a new roof, windows and door, at the neighbouring grade-B listed camp chapel, used by displaced Ukrainians held there after World War Two, most working in local agriculture and forestry.
