UK tourists have been issued a ‘clear message’ by residents of Lanzarote amid anti-tourism protests. On Sunday, October 20 a reported 10,000 people participated in demonstrations against mass tourism across the Canary Islands.

Protests took place in holiday hotspots in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and El Hierro. Participants chanted slogans such as “The Canary Islands are not for sale” and “We are foreigners in our land”.

Demonstrators have raised concerns over the effects of mass tourism on the Canary Islands, including the environmental impact and the knock-on effect of holiday rentals on the housing market.

Protests were previously held on April 20 in the Canary Islands, while similar demonstrations have taken place in other popular tourist destinations including Majorca and Ibiza throughout the spring and summer.
