The death of a talented young footballer has led to a huge outpouring of grief. A minute's applause was held for Ross Aikenhead ahead of the Wythenshawe Town vs Wythenshawe match, along with players wearing black arm bands and moments of remembrance at other matches across the region for Ross.
He played for Winsford United. Bosses paid tribute to Ross, who was in his 20s, calling him a ‘fantastic young man and a terrific footballer’.
The Cheshire side, which plays in the North West Counties League First Division South, said he would be ‘sorely missed’. A lifelong neighbour shared a moving tribute.
Ross, who lived in Sale, was ‘kind, considerate, well-minded’ and a ‘beautiful person’, she said.
