A Tory minister has crassly accused the SNP of giving Scots "somewhere safe and warm to take heroin".In an odd rant about the Scottish education system, House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt took aim at safe drug consumption rooms. After having a go at attainment in Scottish schools, Mordaunt said: "But they will have, of course, somewhere safe and warm to take heroin."The UK's first drug consumption room in Glasgow was approved in September. The move has been hailed by drug experts and has been part of a Daily Record campaign.Drug consumption rooms allow people with addiction problems to take drugs in a safe place.
Evidence has shown that they drastically reduce drug deaths.Scotland has the highest number of drug deaths in Europe.Responding to SNP business questions spokesperson Deidre Brock, Mordaunt said on Thursday morning: "She might reflect on...
the appalling legacy that such a warped, irresponsible displacement activity has ceded to a generation of Scottish children."A wrecked education system, a widening attainment gap, fewer teachers, maths scores declining in every PISA survey, science at a low record and plumetting literacy rates."But they will have, of course, somewhere safe and warm to take heroin."The Scottish Government's drugs policy minister Elena Whitham said the first safe consumption room could be open by next summer. The £2.3 million facility would be based on Hunter Street.Penny Mordaunt ran twice to become Tory leader last year but lost both times.
