Rangers will have to shell out for a new lay and play pitch at “not inconsiderable cost” if they are to be ready to play at Hampden against Motherwell on August 10 - and could be forced to compensate Queen’s Park if Ibrox is still out of commission beyond September.According to a report, the Light Blues have no appetite to split their domestic and European games between the National Stadium and Scotland’s home of rugby at Murrayfield, with the Edinburgh venue still under consideration amid ongoing talks with SRU chiefs.

The Rangers hierarchy are still seeking a solution to their stadium dilemma. But, as Record Sport revealed on Wednesday, Hampden is looking the most likely option but there remain “considerable obstacles to overcome” according to a report in The Scotsman. They add that Rangers would prefer to play all games at Hampden - they have Scottish Premiership fixtures and crucial Champions League qualifiers in the month of August - rather than “striking deals to use two different venues and then flitting between them”.However, one of the main issues with Hampden Park is the pitch.

This stems from the staging of two concerts by American pop artist Pink in Mount Florida late last month as part of her world tour.

The surface has already been re-seeded following the sell-out gigs and new surface would be needed by the time Rangers ‘host’ the Steelmen in the second game of the league season, with Ross County to follow later in the month. That could be done using the ‘lay and play’ pitch technology to ensure a quick turnaround.
