A plan is underway to get Manchester the Ten O’Clock News a lot more regularly - and for the right reasons. It’s not a secret move, but it has been hidden in plain sight since the end of the pandemic.

It involves city bosses, academic proteges, political elites, business tycoon - and anime fans. It might sound like a rag-tag bunch to work towards a lofty aim like greater international recognition, but the results are encouraging so far.

Join our FREE Manchester City Centre WhatsApp group by clicking here “People always want to come,” Shaun Hinds, the CEO of Manchester Central - formerly known as the G-Mex Centre - said. “It’s got a reputation as a vibrant place to live, work, or visit and we benefit from that.” Broadly Manchester’s top brass want the city to host more conferences and conventions, which bring together the aforementioned corners of society for the good of the city’s economy.

If Manchester Central is anything to go by, the drive to get more visitors in via conferences seems to be working. Last month, the venue announced it had 139,037 visitors in the previous quarter of April, May and June.
