This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the first Northern Soul all-nighter, an event that defined a generation in the UK and beyond.
Following the closure of Manchester's Twisted Wheel club in 1970, Wigan Casino picked up the baton and became the mecca of Northern Soul music throughout the Seventies.
At the heart of it was black American Soul music - typically rarer songs which had a faster tempo and heavy beat, perfect for energetic dancing.
One of the most enduring working class cultural movements, Northern Soul went on to influence diverse pop talents such as Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, Pete Waterman, Fergal Sharkey and Marc Almond.
