Scientists say a routine medical procedure could increase the risk of a patient later experincing severe arthritis. According to a new study, having tonsils removed as a child could result in the inflammatory condition appearing later in life.

The findings, published in the journal RMD Open, looks into the theory that childhood infections have a developmental role in the condition.

Ultimately, genetic predisposition is the leading cause of the disease, however, scientists are now looking at early life factors that could play a role.
