Ten sailors were injured after a fire broke out on board the UK’s largest naval warship HMS Queen Elizabeth. The £3bn aircraft carrier was docked at Glen Mallan on Loch Long when the blaze took hold on Friday last week.Around 100 beds were destroyed by the flames with injured ship staff treated by medics.
The fire is believed to have started in an air conditioning unit on the mess decks. Crews battled the flames with extinguishers before compartments were sealed off to prevent the blaze from spreading further, the Mirror reports. The ship, which was officially named by the late Queen Elizabeth in 2014, was moored to unload ammunition when the fire started. Some sailors were drunk as they were off-duty and it was Friday night. “Those that were fit enough were given jobs to help with the fire.
Sprinkler systems eventually extinguished it.”It is the latest issue for the aircraft carrier that has been beset by problems and was unable to set sail for a NATO exercise last month.
