Taekwon-do World Championships 2023 as Ayrshire club wins 18 medals and six world titles

A Kilmarnock club came back from the Taekwon-do World Championships with 18 medals and six world titles.The Phoenix Taekwon-do club battled among 2,000 competitors from around the globe at the prestigious competition held in Coventry.The martial arts club has competed in national and international competitions over the years and worked hard to represent Scotland at the World Championships 2023.The three-day event took place at Coventry Skydome Arena from Friday, July 14 until Sunday, July 16 where all divisions including juniors, youths, cadets, adults, executives and super executives competed for a title.Scott McMillan, 6th dan in taekwondo and the senior instructor at Phoenix, said: "All the club students that competed should be very proud of themselves, the results were amazing with 18 medals in total.

I was a very proud instructor."All students have had a great experience and learned a lot and most likely became more confident in themselves."However with all the preparation, hard work, the 4-6 days training to get ready, some of them had dietary and additional training changes to make weight divisions."There was a double World Champion in the shape of Hazel Tosh, who made it 9 times Black Belt World Champion.

Sarah Poole who competed with black belt ladies flyweight, won the world international team title for Scotland with her teammates and captain Joanne Duncan.

She also picked up silver in her point stop category and bronze in her continuous category. Scott continued: "There was an incredible performance from the girls to retain the title from 2018 when Hazel Tosh was in the team with Joanne and Gillian Duncan."Alba Wyllie in the black belt youths girls, had to fight England, Scotland, USA and Ireland to win her
