For centuries, gardens have held a special place in the hearts of our Royal Family, offering sanctuary, inspiration and places to entertain.

In Tudor times they were seen as status symbols and were dramatically decorative before becoming, in the Victorian era, less formal spaces used for rest and relaxation.

So it’s no surprise that, following his cancer diagnosis in February, King Charles immediately headed to Sandringham, the royal family’s 20,000-acre Norfolk sanctuary, famous for its stunning woodland and peaceful gardens. “I think it’s pretty well-established that stress is cancer’s friend, but being out in the open air, pottering in the garden, is the perfect antidote to stress,” says former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond. “The King really does regard his gardens as his sanctuary and I’m sure his enjoyment of nature will help his recovery. “With Camilla at his side, he will be walking around the Sandringham estate and enjoying the bracing Norfolk air as often as he can.

Now that spring has arrived, he will be buoyed by the new life all around him.” Aside from being one of the favourite residences of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Sandringham is also the estate where Charles has recently indulged his love of garden design, last year unveiling an ambitious topiary garden on the West Lawn.
