A Stirling carer who stole cash from an elderly woman she was looking after was this week jailed for six months.Yvonne Millar had been filmed nicking the money after relatives of the 82-year-old became suspicious.Thirty-one-year-old Millar, of Princes Street, had pleaded guilty to stealing the cash at the pensioner’s Borestone home on June 27 last year.Fiscal depute Ann Orr told Stirling Sheriff Court on Wednesday that the 82-year-old had suffered a stroke and required help.Millar had been attending the pensioner’s home as carer for a number of months. However, the fiscal depute said there had been “some issue raising concern” and “as a result of that a camera was set up in the living room of the address”.On June 27, 2022, the pensioner’s handbag was sitting on a chair.Millar arrived at 9am that morning to provide care - and no other person was in the property. She helped the pensioner to the bathroom.

Millar was then captured on camera taking money from the handbag and putting it in her pocket. The sum of £20 was later found to be missing from the handbag.

Ms Orr said the matter was reported to the accused’s employer and the police. When cautioned and charged by officers, Millar made no reply.Millar’s lawyer Virgil Crawford told Sheriff Keith O’Mahony that his client had lost her carer job as a result of the crime, and was now working as a cleaner. The only explanation offered, he said, was that Millar had been under “personal stresses” at the time.Mr Crawford asked Sheriff O’Mahony to deal with the matter as an alternative to a custodial sentence.
