The SPFL have reacted to plans to revive the previously doomed European Super League.Celtic and Rangers have been on alert ever since the Euro big guns attempted to form a break away league in 2021, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus leading the charge against UEFA.
In the latest development, clubs across the continent have been contacted to gauge their interest in forming a new European tournament to take the place of the lucrative Champions League.
The Super League 2.0 would involve 60 to 80 teams in a multi-division format, guaranteeing at least 14 games per campaign. However, Neil Doncaster and Co are keeping their powder dry for now as they await the outcome of a court ruling after the initial failed attempt to break away from the current Champions League format.
UEFA wouldn't allow that, which prompted the Super League to declare the European governing body an "illegal monopoly," which was booted out by the powers of justice.A spokesperson for the SPFL told Record Sport: "We have seen today's statement from A22 Sports Management, which is seeking to replace UEFA's Champions League with a new European Super League.
