Scottish island crowned country's first 'Dark Sky Sanctuary' for stargazing
dailyrecord.co.ukA small Scottish island has been named the country's first 'Dark Sky Sanctuary'. On Friday morning, the Isle of Rum in the Inner Hebrides was officially named the 21st Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world by organisation DarkSky International.
The title recognises the island as one of the best places across the globe for stargazing thanks to its remote location and low levels of light pollution.Rum is situated off the west coast of the Scottish mainland in the district of Lochaber.
It is home to around just 40 people, with the island renowned for its diverse wildlife and spectacular scenery.There are five locations around Scotland that have been recognised as Dark Sky Places, including Galloway Forest Park and Glenlivet and Tomintoul.
However, Rum is the first area in Scotland to be declared a Dark Sky Sanctuary, which has stricter criteria.In order to receive the status, the small population on Rum has spent more than two years ensuring that all lighting on the island is dark sky-friendly.
