A Single Scots mum who is also an unpaid carer has spoken of the challenges she faces in bringing up her daughter with autism.Mum-of-two Evelyn Mcgee-Dewar, who lives in Edinburgh, says she has struggled to deal with challenging incidents - including members of the public being "unkind" when she has meltdowns.
The 40-year-old says her daughter's autism can make simple daily tasks a struggle. The working mum receives little to no support for Amy, 11, and has had to cut down hours at work to care for her children while juggling tight budgets amid the cost of living crisis.Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Evelyn said: "The first signs of Amy’s autism were things like her difficulty with speaking and walking on her tiptoes a lot.
Her speech wasn’t developing like other young children’s, I remember a report that said some of her communication skills were like a typical two-year-olds.
You don’t forget moments like that."She was diagnosed when she was only three so we knew for starting school, and she is attending a mainstream school as she is verbal but has issues with communication.
