Alison Herman TV Critic For a few years in the 2010s, TV was seen as a refuge from the intellectual property boom engulfing blockbuster filmmaking. Original, mid-budget stories aimed at adults were no longer welcome at the multiplex, but they could often find a home in a prestige-hungry medium newly attractive to A-list talent. Beginning with the launch of the streaming service Disney+ in 2019, however, “cinematic” universes like Star Wars and Marvel established a presence on the small screen, while the conclusion of “Game of Thrones” that same year kicked off the arms race for the next crossover genre hit. The Primetime Emmy Awards have acknowledged this trend in the past. “WandaVision,” “The Mandalorian,” and “The Boys” all earned series nominations in prior years, affording artistic legitimacy to these franchises in addition to their popular success. (The first two series were the small screen debuts of Marvel and Star Wars, respectively; “The Boys” is a superhero satire that is itself adapted from a comic book, with a budget and fandom to match that of its targets.) But for its 75th annual honors, the Television Academy fully embraced the IP extravaganza that’s enveloped the rest of culture. TV is no longer a refuge from the prevailing winds, but a channel for them.

Emmys Diversity Report: Pedro Pascal Makes Latino History, Black Women Set Acting Record

Of course, much of that is thanks to Pedro Pascal, who has become the most nominated Latino in a single year with three noms. He’s recognized for his work in “The Last of Us” as lead drama actor, “Saturday Night Live” as guest comedy actor and “Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World” as outstanding narrator. Pascal’s nomination for HBO’s dystopian video game adaptation makes him only the second Latino ever recognized in the drama category after Jimmy Smits’ four consecutive noms for “NYPD Blue” from 1996-1999. Top BBC News Anchor Huw Edwards Named as Staffer Accused of Paying Teen for Explicit Images

K.J. Yossman The BBC staffer accused of paying a teenager for sexually explicit photographs has been named as Huw Edwards, one of the network’s top anchors. The equivalent of NBC’s Brian Williams (before he was fired for embellishing an Iraq war story), Edwards is one of the most senior on-air figures at the corporation and was the anchor chosen to break news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death to the world last September. He is the fourth highest paid figure at the BBC. Edwards’ wife, Vicky Flind, issued a statement on the anchor’s behalf saying Edwards is suffering “serious mental health issues” and has been hospitalized. “As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years,” she said. “The events of the last few days have greatly worsened matters.”
