Police confirm what was inside 'bomb' found near Meadowhall

A suspected bomb near Meadowhall turned out to be just an empty shell, the police have said. On Sunday, police were called to the scene at about 3pm after a member of the public thought they saw a bomb in the river near Meadowhall in Sheffield.

Officers closed the roads around Meadowhall Way from Meadowhall Drive to Meadowhall Road until 7pm. A bomb disposal team came and took the suspected bomb.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to Meadowhall Way in Sheffield at 2.57pm yesterday (Sunday 25 February) to reports that a suspected historic explosive device had been discovered in the river by a member of the public." She also said: "A bomb disposal team attended and took the device away, which was found to be an empty shell."
