Phillip Schofield's much-anticipated TV comeback has been met with disappointment as the show failed to make a splash in the ratings. The 62 year old presenter, known for his time on This Morning, had hoped to revive his career with a new Channel 5 documentary series, which premiered more than a year after his controversial "unwise, but not illegal" affair that derailed his career. The three-part docuseries, Phillip Schofield: Cast Away, started airing on Monday 30 September but received harsh criticism and left audiences divided.

Despite the hype, only 1.4 million viewers tuned in to see Phillip stranded on a desert island, a far cry from the numbers he once drew. The series was intended to repair his tarnished public image, yet it backfired with viewers criticising him for seeming "narcissistic" and showing no remorse for the scandal that caused his professional downfall. To add insult to injury, ITV's crime drama Joan, featuring Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, overshadowed Phillip's return by pulling in over 2 million viewers.

OK! has asked Channel 5 for a comment on the ratings. The second episode of Phillip Schofield Cast Away aired on Channel 5 on Tuesday at 9pm, with the third and final part airing at the same time on Wednesday 2 October. The show has been described as "an authentic and intense physical and mental challenge", with Phillip left alone on a deserted island for 10 days, armed only with a camera to document his experience, reports the Mirror.

In the first episode, he confessed to the camera: "In the last 18 months my life has totally unravelled. I locked myself away from the outside world.
