St Johnstone are already out of the Viaplay Cup after another disappointing group campaign. But goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov has stressed the importance of quickly building a winning mentality for the early stages of the upcoming league season.Saints, defeated by Ayr United on Tuesday night, welcome Stirling Albion to McDiarmid Park on Saturday for the final fixture of Group A.The Perth club has already been eliminated and Mitov said: “First and foremost it is a horrible feeling being out of the cup.“We wanted to progress, win the group and go further in the competition.“Every football club wants to go as far as possible in this competition.

Ours was no different.“But we need to pick ourselves up and not let the heads go down because it is a very long season ahead.“We need to make sure we win on Saturday for the fans and get ready for the league starting.“Our fans were brilliant and supported us all the way on Tuesday.“Even though it means nothing for the cup this weekend, we still have to play to win.

We have to build a winning mentality and have that winning feeling.“That gives you confidence going into the first league game of the season.”Saints fell behind against Ayr on Tuesday before Max Kucheriavyi levelled ahead of the break. But a deflected second half strike ended Saints’ hopes of progression.“Goals change games and scoring first is so important,” Mitov told the PA. “Unfortunately we couldn’t do that.“We know we need to take our chances and be ruthless if we want to be a really good team.“I didn’t actually think we played that bad.

The final touch in the opposition box was missing.”Having been in Perth a couple of weeks now, Mitov admits he has been impressed with how the club operates and is relishing the league
