A new online petition is urging the UK Government to “commit to not increasing the State Pension age above 68” following the publication of new research by the International Longevity Centre, which suggested that the State Pension age will need to rise to 71 by 2050 to keep up with projected longer life expectancy.
Petition creator, Louise A Shaw, warned that such a rise would mean “many people have to stay in work for more than 50 years before becoming entitled to a State Pension ” and argues that the “older generation should be allowed to enjoy the time they have left in peace and comfort after giving much of their lives to employment”.
In the ‘Do not increase the State Pension age above 68’ petition on the petitions-parliament website, Ms Shaw urges the UK Government to “spare a thought for them and commit to not increasing the State Pension age ”.You can read the full petition on the petitions-parliament website here. The State Pension age is set to increase to 67 between 2026 and 2028 with a further planned rise to 68 due to take place in the mid-2040’s.
The UK Government will hold a review on this increase two years after the next general election - a date is expected to be announced later this year.PensionBee, a leading online pension provider, has warned that an increase to the State Pension age from the current age of 66 to possibly as high as 71, is quite an “alarming prospect.”Becky O’Connor, Director of Public Affairs at PensionBee, said: “Such a dramatic increase to the State Pension age from the current age of 66 to possibly as high as 71 is quite an alarming prospect.“People depend on the State Pension for a significant chunk of their retirement income.
