An imam has said he and others were forced to barricade themselves inside Southport Mosque as violence erupted outside following a vigil for three children who died in a knife attack in the seaside town.

As police were given more time to question a 17-year-old boy arrested over the shocking attacks, Ibrahim Hussein, the imam at Southport Mosque, spoke out about the violence which left him and others cowering inside.

He told the Manchester Evening News he came to the mosque last night after hearing it was going to be targeted by protesters. “The crowd started to build up,” he said. “They started throwing things and hailing abuse.

In no time, there were hundreds.” READ NEXT: Chaos in Southport as nearly 40 police officers injured during violent riots A clothing bank in the grounds of the mosque was torched amid the disorder.
