Spice Girl Mel B hailed the launch of a £300,000 fund to help domestic violence victims a lifesaver. The 47 year old, who is a patron of Women’s Aid campaigns, said “Today is a great day” to see the fund going towards women fleeing domestic partners and situations.

Last month, Home Secretary Suella Braverman announced the fund as part of a pilot scheme for women in England and Wales. As a result, from Tuesday 9 May, women who have survived abuse can now apply for £250 cash or voucher payments of £500 if they have children through the charity Women’s Aid.

The money can be used for day-to-day essentials such as food, nappies, rent or clothes and Ministers hope that it will be extended if it works well.

Singer Mel B previously revealed to The Sun that she had experienced being in an abusive relationship with her ex partner Stephen Belafonte.
