Martin Lewis urges older women who claimed Child Benefit to check for £5,000 State Pension back pay

Martin Lewis has shared ‘crucial’ Child Benefit need-to-knows in the latest edition of the MoneySavingExpert newsletter (MSE.com).

The financial guru also gives Chancellor Jeremy Hunt one last push before the Spring Budget to consider increasing the higher earnings threshold from £50,000 to £65,000, which would enable more people access to the financial element of Child Benefit.In January, Jeremy Hunt appeared on the Martin Lewis Show to answer questions on a variety of topics, but by far the most Martin had been asked to put to the Chancellor related to Child Benefit, particularly the £50,000 income threshold.

Martin explained: “When I then pushed him on it, he admitted its ‘unfairness’ and asked me to write to him about it (and other issues) afterwards.”The consumer champion sent the detailed letter to 11 Downing Street on January 22, highlighting how the High Income Child Benefit charge unfairly penalises single-income families.

He also urged the Chancellor to cancel the Lifetime ISA (LISA) withdrawal penalty for all first-time buyers, put a stop to mid-contract, above-inflation broadband and mobile price hikes and free 'mortgage prisoners'.
