Manchester United have rejected a £20million bid from West Ham for defender Harry Maguire. Maguire's future at Old Trafford is uncertain after he was stripped of the captaincy this summer.

He ended last season as fourth-choice central defender and United need to sell players to raise cash for transfer funds. West Ham are set for a shopping spree after selling club captain Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105million, but after seeing the bid for Maguire rejected it is unlikely they will return with another offer.

David Moyes is an admirer of the England centre-back but any move to east London is likely to require Maguire to take a pay cut from his terms at United. "We need more than 11 players, we need that competition so he can fight himself in the team, he has potential, it's up to him to get his position," Ten Hag said before the pre-season friendly against Arsenal. "Now we can focus more on his role but centre back has to communicate, organise, it's a big area where you have to perform as a centre half, there is prevention that you have to come into action." Maguire made just 16 Premier League appearances last season and fell below Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof in the pecking order by the end of the season.

United spent £80million in signing him for Leicester City in 2019 and any move this summer will see them make a substantial loss on that.
