Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez has called out the Brazilian police force for their handling of Argentina supporters during Tuesday night's World Cup qualifier in the Maracana.
The World Cup winners and Brazil faced off in a heated qualifier for the 2026 competition. Former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi scored the only goal of the game as Argentina claimed the victory.
However, the match was marred by trouble off the pitch. Argentina's captain Lionel Messi and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez attempted to intervene as police rushed their supporters during the national anthems in response to fighting in the stands. Argentina's players chose to return to their dressing room for more than 10 minutes as tensions rose in the stands. The match was ultimately delayed by 30 minutes but the atmosphere inside the iconic stadium did not cool on or off the pitch.
