A lost market where shoppers are said to have been able to buy anything from underwear to a coffin has sparked fond memories for the city's bargain hunters.
Grey Mare Lane market in Beswick was one of the city's biggest before it disappeared as a result of major regeneration in east Manchester.
The modern market as it was known opened in 1971 but there had been a market on Grey Mare Lane going back to at least 1930. The market was for many years an important part of the east Manchester community and drew shoppers from far and wide.
In 1993, it was uprooted to a temporary spot next to Beswick Precinct when work started on extending the east Manchester relief road. The effect on business for the traders was considerable, and in 1994 the Manchester Evening News reported the market, which was "for years the premier spot for Manchester's bargain hunters", had become a "shadow of its former self".
