Man City FC fan hit with match ban after mocking Hillsborough victims from crowd

A football fan has been banned from matches for repeatedly making a 'disgusting' gesture mocking the Hillsborough tragedy. Manchester City supporter David Murphy was handed a football banning order for his conduct during a game against Liverpool on December 22 last year .The 42-year-old was caught on CCTV repeatedly pushing downwards with two clasped hands towards rival fans.

He made the CPR gesture after the final whistle when City won 3-2 in an EFL Cup tie at the Etihad stadium.The father, from Cheshire, claimed in court he was making 'calm down' gestures.

By yesterday magistrates rejected his claims and handed him a fine and a three-year ban from attending football matches. As reported by our sister title, the Manchester Evening News, prosecutor Suzanne Ludlow told Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court that Murphy was spotted by stadium officials 'mimicking CPR gestures' on CCTV after the game, which was marred by trouble.

She said the gestures were directed towards Liverpool supporters in the ground after the final whistle and that the stadium officials concluded the gestures were 'disgusting' and designed to mock the Hillsborough disaster.The 1989 stadium crush tragedy resulted in the deaths of 97 supporters.
